Tour Operator Fined For Unlawful Activity In Park

DEASE LAKE - Anton Kurz was fined $2,000 and his $4,000 boat forfeited to the Crown after being found guilty of unlawfully conducting commercial activity within Kiniskan Lake Provincial Park and for illegally acting as an angling guide.

Kurz, who owns and operates the Bear Paw Ranch Resort, a wilderness tour facility in northern British Columbia, was found guilty and fined in Dease Lake provincial court Oct. 28, 2003, under both the Park Act and the Wildlife Act.

The Conservation Officer Service Special Investigations Unit launched an investigation after BC Parks staff received a tip about illegal activities being conducted in the park.

The investigation determined that Kurz actively advertised and conducted commercial wilderness tours and fishing trips within a provincial park without holding the necessary authorizations.

This fine and forfeiture support the government's efforts to guard provincial parks and protected areas by properly managing commercial activities within these areas.
