Public Input Sought for Evan Thomas Provincial Recreation Area Management Plan

Alberta Community Development is seeking public input into a management plan for the Evan Thomas Provincial Recreation Area in the Kananaskis Valley.

Based on consultations with stakeholders and interested visitors and citizens, a Local Advisory Committee was formed in the fall of 2000 to consider the many issues and concerns for this area and provide recommendations. The Committee completed its report in the fall of 2001. It contained valuable information that has assisted the planning team in preparing a draft management plan. The planning team consists of government departments with a mandate in the area plus a representative of the Kananaskis Improvement District.

The public is invited to provide input on the draft management plan, which will be distributed to everyone on the mailing list or who indicates their interest by calling toll free 310-0000 then (403) 678-5508 and asking to be placed on the mailing list. Alternatively, copies are available from the Kananaskis Country Web site (go to: www.cd.gov.ab.ca). Written comments will be received until February 14, 2003.

Evan Thomas Provincial Recreation Area is the most significant development node in Kananaskis Country. Facilities include the hotels at the Kananaskis Village, Nakiska Ski Hill, Sundance Lodges, Ribbon Creek Youth Hostel, Kananaskis Golf Course, Mt. Kidd RV Park, three staff housing areas and other recreation facilities.

The Kananaskis Country Recreation Policy (May 1999) established that a management plan would be required for this area prior to further development proposals receiving consideration. The management plan will guide management of the important recreation, environmental and scenic values, as well as human activity in this protected area. It will also provide direction for any proposed future facility developments.

Alberta Community Development's business plan includes a commitment to prepare and complete management plans for our parks and protected areas to determine how they are managed in the future. Park management plans include the following core elements:
* Description of the protected areas and the surrounding environment and community.
* Clear statements about how government will achieve its stated goals for the parks and protected areas system in the affected area, including preserving Alberta's natural heritage, providing outdoor recreation and heritage appreciation programs, and supporting appropriate tourism opportunities.
* Description of how the protected areas will meet the needs and desires of the community.
* Provisions for ongoing review and public consultation on park management.

For more information, phone Don Cockerton (403) 297-5969 (for toll-free access, dial 310-0000 followed by (403) 297-5969).
