While many fly fishers are getting ready for the trout fishing to begin, Derrick Rothermel is looking north to the Yukon for pike on the fly. This spring, Derrick contributes some of his favorite pike flies, and has some great supporting material on his personal web page.
Derrick has provided four of his pike flies and includes the tying material for each one.
A Few Tips
Derrick's friend, Clive Schaupmeyermy suggests trying a variety of retrieval depths, strip speeds and actions, until you hit a technique that works for that lake. A good way to start is to let your line sink for a few seconds after the cast (depending on the water deoth) and then retrieve the line in short, snappy four-inch strips every second or two.
When plying new water, Derrick likes to use a large black leech, and fish it just off the bottom with a very slow retrieve. One some past trips, this has been the best producing pattern.
Fishing the shallows, Derrick recommends a floating line with a 10 foot sink tip. This is good from three to ten feet of water.
